Date and Time for placing Carla's Ashes to Rest, and Open House

On  June 15, 2013, Noon-1:30 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, we will be placing Carla’s ashes to rest. The cemetery is located at 1342 East 5th South, south of the University of Utah Rice Eccles Football stadium. If you enter on 6th South from 1300 East, you will see us. There will be no official ceremony taking place. It will be a time for people to come pay any last respects, hold or view her beautiful urn, and just visit. You are welcome to place any small type of trinket, letter, or any small object in the vault that will hold Carla’s urn. The grounds people will seal all the items inside the vault with the urn. Please come anytime between the stated time frame and stay as long as or little as you want, or come to the open house. This is a casual event.

Following this special event will be an open house at our home from 2-5pm, 2807 E. 3100 S. There will be food, snacks, desserts, drinks and many happy conversations to be had. There will be a slush machine serving Carla's favorite drink, margaritas. First come, first served. There will be some tequila to add to your virgin margarita if you want the real thing. Please feel welcome to come by and share this special time with us, and celebrate one more time this wonderful person.

Let me say that I have been comforted so many times by having Carla’s ashes near me and our family. At times I feel reluctant to place such a beautiful urn with her cremains in a place that I will not be able to hold. Then I think of the emptiness of having a marker on the ground without her there. It is the right thing to do, and I hope the place is peaceful for all and especially for my dear Carla.

With all our love,

The Hennessy’s

Special memories from Marisa, our niece

You never know what to expect when my nieces spend the night or travel with us out of town. Beneath the laughing and jokes I hear, there is a tender side. Marisa wrote us this letter and I wanted to share with everyone, because it's special, and it's not something that you put in a box after you read it. Thank you Marisa. You are such a thoughtful person and it meant a lot to us.

Words from the celebration 3 of 3

While out for a run this Saturday evening about 6pm (it was a beautiful day), I ran past the house of Carla's manager from The Red Balloon Toy Store just as she was attempting drive off with her son and daughter in-law. I flagged them down just 20 feet from her driveway. Sherylyn got out of the car and gave me hug. We talked about the changes and how we both still cannot believe what has transpired. She asked about Carla's ashes and we talked about her celebration services. She said Carla would be very happy how the celebration was done and really liked "Thriller" at the end. It brought smiles to both of us. Thank you Sherylyn.

I was the last of the three speakers at the celebration. There was so much I could say, and I can talk endlessly about Carla. Not knowing how I was going to do with speaking, I prepared a bunch of bullet points that I hope would touch everyone with a memory or personal story.  In hindsight, given how comfortable I was, I would have spoken much longer, maybe walked up the aisle, point some people out, who knows, maybe sing a song. Over the past two years when we were at the hospital or at home trying to get through a tough moment or recovering from one, I would sing to her...some Kenny Chesney or Brad Paisley songs. And I still do sing to her.

Words from the celebration 2 of 3

As promised, here is the second eulogy for Carla written by Jay Graft. If you know Jay, he doesn't go by a script. He just needs a topic and will run with it. His topic was Carla. When I asked him if he would like to speak, he said, "Large crowd...captive audience..." He was all in!
Just before the services he asked me to review some of the content of his proposed conversation. There was story in there that was a bit over the top for the crowd, so I kindly said "You can't say that in there!" To your disappointment, the G-rated version of the actual talk is below...missing is the ad libbing and the laughter of the crowd.

Jay Graft's talk 2/26/2013

Thoughts regarding Carla
I’ve been asked, by Jeff, to share some of my thoughts and stories regarding Carla.

Just by looking into this jam packed room, it’s obvious the impact Carla has had on all our lives.  Her light she shared, still shines, it shines even brighter with all of us here celebrating Carla.

McCall and Callie, please take these stories and remember the fun times and person your mother was.

Is there anyone who doesn’t know Carla’s catch phrase, “Oh my Hell!”?  I’ve got to be honest; she used that on me countless times.  It didn’t matter if I was at fault or not.  The best part of hearing “Oh my Hell!” was the twinkle in Carla’s eye and the subtle smile she’d flash at you.

I met Carla a few times before she and Jeff were married, nothing big, just a “Hi” or something said as we passed each other.  It was after they were married I got to truly get to see Carla in full Carla mode.

Andrew Wyllie and I went to visit Jeff and Carla in their first house, shortly after they had completed their renovations.  Carla was working in the kitchen in and amongst her beloved pigs.  We chitchatted for a minute or two and then Jeff, Andrew, and I went to the family room to watch a ball game.  Jeff left to get some salsa and chips for us to eat.  Andrew and I sat there on the light colored sectional, with the white throw rug under the glass table.

When Jeff returned with the salsa and chips, he had me pick up my feet and promptly placed an unfolded newspaper on the floor.  He then put another unfolded section across my lap.  Carla was beside herself, with Jeff.  She let Jeff know how rude it was to treat me that way, and that Jeff should promptly remove the papers.  Jeff told Carla she had no idea how badly I could spill, and to make Jeff’s point, I dropped salsa onto both papers.

Carla looked at me, unbelieving in what she saw.  It was the first time I’d received “Oh my Hell!” from Carla.  She apologized to Jeff for getting on him and thanking him for being so cognizant of his friend’s lousy eating habits.  This would become the Carla I’d get to know oh so well.

How many of you have attended a party with, or hosted, by Carla?  Carla was the type of person if there were more than three people gathered, a party could shortly ensue.

Halloween was the holiday Carla truly enjoyed.  The decorations, the costumes, and best of all the party she would be having.  Carla loved to play games that could cause embarrassment to those who played.  She would wear the brightest lipstick and pass an orange to an unsuspecting male, only to leave a smudged lip print on his person.

Carla loved to paint walls.  She would get so excited to tell of the new color she’d chosen and what it would match.  Being the good friend that I am, I exploited Carla’s painting love to get help painting my house.  Carla suggested the color for Joanna’s and my kitchen, and then she helped me paint it.  When it was finished she felt something was missing.  On the accent wall she freehand painted a square, matching the color of the other wall, so that a picture would “pop” more.  We’ve received more compliments about this very simple task.

Free labor does come at a price, however.  Carla was helping with a large 20 foot wall in the family room.  She was up on a ladder, cutting the corner, when my phone rang, it was my wife, seeing how things were going.  I was talking to Joanna on the speaker, when Carla started screeching, a spider had come towards Carla.  Joanna asked what was going on, without missing a beat, Carla loudly proclaimed that she and I had been caught making out!  Good thing Joanna knew all about Carla proclivity for practical jokes.

Community Working Stories

Utah Jazz Volunteer for formal Sneakers and Suit event

-Not impressed by the player’s status

-made a name for herself when she called C.J. Miles/Ronnie Brewer Baby-faced

-Matt Harpring- Seated at Matt’s table made Matt stand because Matt’s wife had just had a baby.  Once Matt was properly chastised by wife, Carla was able to get what she really wanted, the baby.

Hospital Stories

We know how Carla worked to make all of us more at ease with her illness, even when she was tired and sick.

  • Visiting Carla when she had to go the bathroom.  I excused myself to leave and from the bathroom she chided, “With three girls in your house, this still embarrasses you?”

  • Becoming passionate about others who were going through leukemia treatments.

  • Meeting new patients and telling them she was their new friend.

  • Husband with wife who was uncomfortable during treatment and Carla taking over.

Carla’s December Blog
I was also approached by my case worker and picked by the clinic to participate for the “Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research” (BMT Conference Survivorship panel.) It will be held here in SLC in February 13-17. (Only 2 people were chosen from all the hospitals around the state). I’ll possibly be answering questions from nurses and a doctor around the United States about what is was like to be a transplant patient, how I was treated, what could be improved etc. I feel very honored….and yes….a little nervous!

 Last Visit in October

Seeing Carla dancing Proud Mary with Erin and making sure they had the “rolling” arms going at right time.

Hearing Carla laugh and seeing her smile.  When she left she complained her cheeks hurt from laughing so much.

Final Passage:

John 14:2

In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.

We all know, Carla is there right now picking out the paint and working on the décor for these rooms.

Words from the celebration

People told me that the chapel was overflowing with people and many were not able to hear everything, so I thought I would post the eulogies for people to read. Keep in mind, the context of these are a celebration when you read them. Also, missing is the upbeat music, the pastor's great words, the energy from the room, and of course all of the many people which set the tone for the celebration. I will follow up with Jay Graft's and mine.

Eulogy by Jason Farley 2/26/2013- Carla's brother

In the early spring of 1993 a young spry Jeff Hennessy showed up at my parents’ house for the first time…looking sharp to impress my family. Carla and I for whatever reason quickly escalated things into a water fight.

As Carla came out onto the back deck with a big glass of water… I picked up the hose… she threw the water at me… and ran to get back inside the house.

Jeff closed the door on Carla… and threw the deadbolt.

This was a joyous moment for me and I began to douse Carla from head to toe with the hose.
Seconds later… my drenched sister leapt past me and ran into the garage.

Meanwhile inside the house… Jeff turned around to see looks of shock on everyone’s faces which translated into “WHAT DID YOU JUST DO”. He knew that he had made a mistake at that moment… by giving me a victory against Carla.

My only thought was “Thanks Jeff, that was awesome, it was great meeting you”.

Luckily Carla looked past that moment and found herself in the greatest partnership imaginable.

Without difficult moments that each of us face at times in life, there is no contrast to the joy we all feel.

Without suffering… joy and happiness become commonplace.

Suffering and loss allow us to appreciate all that life holds for us… that is good in the world.

Whenever loss… fear… and doubt overwhelms you, look toward all those around you that bring joy in your life.

In time… pain will be replaced with moments of joy; each moment of joy is a direct result… of the gifts life brings to us.

Carla is one of these gifts; the joy she brought to us all… will live on as an example in those of us who continue our journey.

My sister’s gift… is the ability to make each person she encounters feel unique, special, loved and accepted for who they are... She just wants to discover the best in everyone… and for them to know that she is there for them without pretext or judgment.

Carla and I were fierce competitors as many brothers and sister are; our battles played out in the age old game of “touched you last”.

Today I declare in front of all of you that Carla is the winner of “touched you last”, she touched me and each person in this room so profoundly, I believe we can all declare her a winner for life.

My heartfelt love and devotion goes out to each of you here to celebrate my sister that I love so very much, but especially to Jeff, McCall, Callie and my parents.

I love you Carla.

Thank you all very much for being here to celebrate my sister Carla.

Ashes...Finding the right spot.

Since we held Carla’s celebration of life services, so much has happened…some good and some not so good. I will write about them here in the coming posts but wanted to update everyone on where Carla’s ashes will be dedicated and when.

I have found a place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery (1342 East 5th South) for Carla’s ashes, which is directly South of Rice Eccles Stadium. Go UTES! After visiting five times, I decided on a location very close to the 6th South entrance off of 1300 East. At this time I want to thank my brother Brian and his wife Tara for contributing to the cemetery plot and the services necessary for Carla’s ashes to be laid to rest. In addition, I have been finalizing the design of the marker for Carla’s ashes. Another thank you is needed to my coworkers whom made contributions to pay for the marker and more. Thank you all so much for your generosity.

In regards to the day to dedicate her ashes, I want to wait until the marker is finished so that it will be there. It will likely be the first or second weekend of June. I should be able to give at least a week’s notice, just depends on the marker.

Out for a run…
While running laps around Canyon Rim Park today I ran into one of our neighbors, Erik Olsen.  He asked how we were doing. I thanked him for his and the community’s support, and he made a comment that took me back to the day of Carla’s services. He said if there was any indication of how much people loved and cared about us, you could tell by looking out over the crowd and how much the church was full and overflowing. He was right. And we felt that. Even John Holbrook, who took care of Carla’s ashes, had never seen so many cars, even for the Bell Ringer events during the Holidays. That was surely the largest crowd I have ever spoken to in my life. I truly drew on the strength of everyone there and I felt more at ease as the crowd got larger. It really let me know that people were there for us. I had a feeling of calmness and purpose.

Just a short story before I close for the night…
A few hours prior to the services, Jason and I went to the church to see how things were arranged. When we arrived, we noticed a fire truck parked in the back and hoped that nobody was having a serious problem, then we went into the church to find Pastor Pat and walk through the services. Although the chapel was empty, I didn’t feel alone. I read my eulogy to an empty room, as did Jason, and felt prepared. Pastor Pat asked me how I felt being in the chapel. I replied, “I feel at ease, calm.”  He said, “Good, that is how you should feel. You’ll do just fine.” With that bit of encouragement, Jason and I started to make our way through the church to leave, all the while I was thinking about having enough room for people at the services. So I said let’s peek inside the gym to see what kind of room is in there, and as we approached the gym we could her some people playing basketball. I opened the door and what do you know. It’s young firemen. I couldn’t resist making a crack that this must have been a sign that we were at the right place for Carla, and those old wooden gym doors would have been her gateway to heaven. Had I been a little more on more toes, I would have told that story for all to here…but, I guess I got to tell it here for all to read.
